We all know that corsets play a big role in the Goth subculture. What not many people do know is what the Goth subculture actually is and stands for. Several people confuse the movement or fashion with various heavy metal styles, especially that of black metal with its emphasis on painted faces and dark leather accessories.
But what is Gothic fashion? It can stereotyped as dark, at times morbid and eroticized style of dress. They usually come with dark eyeliner and dark fingernails. The forms of dress from many in this movement usually borrow heavily from Elizabethan and Victorian styles. Though not true for all professed Goths, many of them wear a combination of at least some of these items.
The Goth movement is one that constantly challenges norms and emphasizes freedom of expression thus it's not always easy to pigeonhole which things belong mainly to the Goth subculture and which are borrowed from others. Goth fashion puts a premium on transformation beauty, eroticism and otherness. Many are drawn to the scene because of its strong sense of alienation, whether or not outright nihilism is actually present. This feeling of alienation leads to the popularity of outlandish or morbid/vampire styles. Black eyeshadow and shroud-like clothing may express grief, mourning or despair.
It is not necessarily anti-life though and may also a transformation from alienation to self-expression through fashion and the revelation of the darker side of sexuality. Goth rejects mainstream conventions and prides itself with beauty through modification It presents the power of an individual to create his or herself above the constraints of the society which encloses it. It can be recognized almost immediately from its dark clothing, hair and make-up with strong shades of other colors which emphasize eroticism and sexuality.
